Aging and dying, going into "the light"/"white light", "the other side":
these are all repeated throughout "Hopes and Fears". I'm wondering, is that supposed to be the theme? Or is that just Tim's writing style?
And, if it is the theme, is death supposed to be the hope or the fear?

I also wondered if 'meet you on the other side'
was some kind of reference to death?

I think it is. I don't know what else it could mean. It's so romantic, in an unusual way! |

light is usally interpreted as a reference to the divine. but perhaps it's just about illumination, when a person is made to reveal who they really are (by the provocation of another person), they are almost made transparent, and made vulrenable. we see their true selves. there are also many repititions of knowing throughout this album too. i think most of the songs are about harsh realisations about another person. that you might know them better than they do themselves. light is used as a metaphor for so many things, it would be best if tim could explain...hint...hint...

i suppose it depends, my question would be: on the other side of what?

Well, I didn't think of it that way. That's nice, too. I like to think it references to death, though, because it reminds me how little time we have on earth; and if we love someone, we should tell them before time runs out.

Is "Bend and Break" about aging or dying? It reminds me af the novel-turned-movie, "The Notebook", where the wife gets alzheimers and can't remember her husband. Once in a while, though, she recognizes him. It's so sad! Everytime I hear the song I think of that.
I really don't know what the song means, though. That's just my interpretation ... |

in bend and break that phrase is more about getting through a really dark state of mind and emerging into brighter, happier times. the old saying 'the darkest hour is just before the dawn' is very true and potent i think. people often say that with proper depression, things can seem unbearably awful as your thoughts run around each other in the dark of the night but when the sun rises you can get more perspective and see things in a more hopeful way. see patrick humphries' book on nick drake for his thoughts on how this phenomenon affected that great songwriter. anyway for me i've always loved the mornings...the day is new and full of possibilities. the song reminds me of when i was young and in the mornings i'd phone tom or richard or other friends and we'd make plans to meet up in town or play football or whatever. i still feel the same way...for example i alway write songs best early in the morning.
untitled 1 is probably a bit darker...but i think bedshaped is the song on the album that has the most to do with death. i've talked about that song elsewhere on this forum so if you're interested check out my ramblings there!! thanks guys and thanks for taking an interest in the details of our songs...that's what it's all about. love from tim |

Thanks for answering all that in such detail.

Yipee, I'm right for once, that's exactly what the song means to me. And that's what I see in SOWK and Can't Stop Now - moving on from one's problem's and putting them behind you, a bit of hope coming out of despair. _________________ "Actually, I do kill people and I like to wear women's clothes" - Richard Hughes, 17/10/2004 |

wow, thats just how I hear the song. I love that saying it is very very true. It's always good to hear what a song means to the person that wrote it.
Thank you for taking the time to answer this interesting question Tim |

HUH? what? when?
I totally agree with that, I never said it wasn't like that!
I really connect with those lyrics coz they inspire me the same way as watching the sun rise over a sleeping town from the hills and looking at the beauty of it all, knowing that in some sad way it'll all get soiled by everyone waking up but that it will be wiped clean again but the coming night and wake refreshed and new again every morning....opps sorry, this isn't my thread....i'll shut up now

Wow, Tim, thank you for responding!
Often if I'm sad, I'll stay up until the sun rises, and I feel happier. It's strange how that works!
Anyways, thank you again, and please keep writing these beautiful songs!
